STREAM is supported financially by the European Commission's LIFE-Nature programme. Natural England is working with project participants the Environment Agency, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Wessex Water. The UK River restoration centre provides technical advice and support to the project.

LIFE

The LIFE-Nature fund supports the positive management and enhancement of sites of European importance for nature conservation, collectively known as the Natura 2000 series of sites - SPAs and SACs. LIFE-Nature is providing 40% of the funding for the STREAM project.

The LIFE Programme is a European Community initiative that provides funding to encourage sustainable development and assist in the implementation of the European Commission's environmental policies.

LIFE (the Financial Instrument for the Environment) which was introduced in 1992, is one of the spearheads of the European Union's environmental policy. It co-finances projects in three areas: LIFE-Environment, LIFE-Third Countries and LIFE-Nature

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is the leading wildlife charity in Hampshire and the Island. Its aim is to protect the two counties' countryside and wildlife for the benefit of existing and future generations. The Trust is responsible for over 60 wildlife reserves comprising more than 2280 hectares of wildlife habitat, including nationally and internationally important sites. It works closely with conservation volunteers, members of the public, landowners and a wide range of organisations to conserve wildlife in town and countryside.

Its vision is "A sustainable future for wildlife and people", and it works across two main fronts: rebuilding biodiversity and education. The Trust owns and manages 34 Nature Reserves, including a length of the River Wylye, a major tributary on the Avon. It also coordinates biological records from Wiltshire and Swindon; offers conservation advice to a range of organisations and individuals; involves volunteers in practical conservation tasks and supports environmental education activities.

The River Restoration Centre - project advisor

The River Restoration Centre

The River Restoration Centre (RRC) is the UK's national information and advisory centre for river restoration, enhancement and sustainable river management techniques. It provides a focus for the exchange of information and expertise through a network of experienced river restoration practitioners and a 'rivers network' of demonstration sites and restoration projects. It disseminates information through an advice service, a website, publications, and an annual conference. The RRC is a national centre of the European Centre for River Restoration, which will allow Europe wide dissemination of river restoration information generated by this project.
